Anheuser-Busch Beer to Cover Ground with its Latest Pre-Order of Tesla Semi-Trucks

Count Anheuser-Busch of Budweiser and Lime-A-Ritas fame as one of the newest companies placing pre-orders for Tesla’s semi-trucks.

The Belgium-based company has placed an order of 40 Tesla semi-trucks in an effort to increase the use of low-emissions vehicles for its operations, part of a corporate plan to reduce its operational carbon footprint by 30 percent by 2025. The company has confirmed the semi-trucks will be used to ship beer to wholesalers located up to 200 miles from its breweries as part of its 700-plus fleet. The company also has a network of carriers which own and manage Anheuser-Busch-branded delivery trucks, so they may even decide to transact with Tesla instead.

This move is expected to save tons of fuel. In a remark made to the Wall Street Journal by James Sembrot, Anheuser-Busch’s senior director of logistics strategy, it was confirmed the brand spent roughly $120 million on fuel on an annual basis.

Now picture a nice red Tesla semi pulling all that brew.

“At Anheuser-Busch, we are constantly seeking new ways to make our supply chain more sustainable, efficient, and innovative,” said Sembrot. “This investment in Tesla semi-trucks helps us achieve these goals while improving road safety and lowering our environmental impact.”

Anheuser-Busch has previously been an early adapter of new transportation initiatives through its work with energy companies to develop and implement hydrogen-powered engines, test self-driving technology, and partnering with technology-enabled trucking services to optimize trucking capacity and reduce wasted miles on the road. Last year, an autonomous truck carrying 50,000-plus Budweiser cans completed a 132-mile route from Ft. Collins to Colorado Springs in the first move of its kind by the brand.

Beer hauler.

Other companies, such as J.B Hunt Transport Services, Walmart, and Loblaws, a Canadian grocery store chain, have also placed orders with approximately 140 reservations to date. Tesla has been mum on the number of companies placing deposits and what its largest order has been to date although some publications have created their own “scorecards” based on reports.

No word yet if Anheuser-Busch plans to purchase or lease the vehicles nor was there a dollar amount disclosed for the value of the reservation.
